[tempo] rubato

7.02.2013

My current tempo is in rubato. I've been "playing with expressive and rhythmic freedom", testing the waters of this whole blogging thing. So far topics of discussion have been limited to parenthood and running, but as I mentioned in my very first post, there's a lot more to me and I don't want to neglect any of those things that I'm composed of.  I need help, though. Feedback.

Granted, this is a new site and the traffic isn't all that heavy yet but it's been awfully lonely over here. Conversation has been lopsided and partiularly heavy on my end. I promise I'm not a needy person; I'm good at independence. That said, I envisioned this blog to be a place where I could share and offer something to the cyber world. Reach out and touch someone, you know. But it wasn't meant to be a platform for me to wax on about my life's musings. I've never been comfortable in the spotlight and monologues make me anxious.

So let's do this. Let's get to know each other and have some dialogue, friends.  Clearly, I'll be leading discussion, but there can still be an exchange. My mother-in-law says, "we were born with two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we talk". Well, in this scenario - so that we can read twice as much as we write - we have two eyes and err.... two...hands... OK, that didn't quite work out the way it was supposed to, but you get my drift.

Jenni, of Story of My Life blog fame,  addressed this very topic and is responsible for putting the wind in my sails, so I feel ready to  tackle the balance she talks about. To start, I'd love your thoughts on my thoughts. Also, if anything I post is confusing and strikes a cord, let me know. I'll try to clarify. And if you have any questions or if there's something in particular you would like to read more about, tell me. I might be opening a whole new bag of worms here but as my 20-year old self would say: "bring it". Please and thank you.

Personally, i find this first week of Current Tempo's cyberlife to be a great teaser - "tapas" preceeding the feast to come! In this short 7 day span I find myself already checking in daily to see what treat you've laid out for the day. Keep it up Lew! Love the subjects and love the writing!

Thank you, as always, for your encouragement Claudi. Any success I've ever had I owe, in part to you & your support; running, birth, art... ou name it.

This winter, you helped me shuttle the canoe on Seneca Creek for a solo four mile drift. It was a calm adventure - I was ridding my morning coffee upper and morning beer downers. The water was low and cold, and the canoe slid smoothly along the slower sections. That day was a good memory.

Those days are where the most meat in the soup we call life is found. I always enjoy telling you about them, and I know they make you happy. Keep writing and I will keep reading; don't equate the sound of crickets to silence. Your entries make me happy, and maybe sometimes I'll reciprocate. There's some good meat there.

How about adding some art work to you musings; the pictures are great and I like a lot how you show them. The sepia colored pics are my favorite, it gives your writing a quiet, nostalgic, sempiternal feeling. Your drawings or just spontaneous, improvised doodling, some times can tell us a lot...unfocused or unconscious drawing. I was reading that there is a list of the famous doodlers in history, like many American Presidents including Thomas Jefferson, well known to doodle during meetings. Poet and physician John Keats doodled in the margins of his medical notes; other literary doodlers have included Samuel Beckett and Sylvia Plath. And they are pretty much at the top of the list of creative individuals. I am discovering lately, in my doodling, more than in my actual sketches/drawings, early concerns with patterns and aspects of nature that were probably in my unconscious too drawned by my conscious mind and the everyday senseless concerns. You are doing so good, that I have to revise and revise my own writing before presenting in my blog. Don't feel bad, you are not discouraging me, on the contrary, you are kicking my butt...as you would say, challenging my desire to write. Thank you for blogging, but every day? now, that is a big imposition to yourself...but, so far, SO GOOD. Keep up the good work!
PS don't forget your sewing...stich by stich...

That's a great idea, Mami. But I don't have a scanner... I'm looking into some sketchbook apps though. Drawing on a tablet could b very interesting - a whole new media.
And keep up its the writing; you've got great ideas nd an interesting voice. I like it best in your most natural tongue but maybe you delve into Spanglish so as not to lose your English speaking audience?

Yeah, I suppose we each do have our solo venture that we seem to appreciate best in solitude. But, to use your analogy and take it a step further: it's nice to sit down for a meal and share it with another who will enjoy it. I may be vegetarian but that soup you're serving sounds delicious and I'll likely have seconds.

i agree with andy about the crickets equation - comments on blogs all over the place are way down compared to what it used to be, but that doesn't mean people aren't reading. in fact, i subscribe via feedly so you wouldn't even see in site analytics that i've 'visited' so to speak. but i hear you on wanting conversation - it's a valuable thing, and i already feel cozier just having heard everyone's voice and your responses. lovely, luce!

in terms of balance in life, i used to think in much more micro terms - as in every day i wanted to do x, y, z and cover all the interests in my life. now i see it much more macro - as in every year i want to do x, y, z. maybe my younger self would have been disappointed in that tempo, but for me it works. and taking that pressure off helps me instead to think geee it's been a while since i've read a whole book or cooked a new dish or tried something totally new or just rocked out to some loud music, and that awareness has only come, i firmly believe, because i took that step back and looked at my life in a bigger scale. hope that makes sense. ;)

so glad you're writing ~ and i just learned a new word: rubato! now i just need to use it once in conversation and it's mine for life. <3
