we made it!

9.08.2014

traveling with a toddler is very different from traveling with a baby. the last time august was on a plane, he was just a couple of months old and about half the size he is now. he also spent the better part of his days sleeping. now, not only is he bigger, but he is decidedly more conscious. and by conscious i mean aware, active, and very curious. combine those with the minimal leg room and cramped seats of a fully booked plane and you'll understand why i was terrified of traveling accross the country with my son.

those fears were nearly confirmed not thirty minutes into the first leg of our seven hour trip when august wiggled out of my arms and onto the lap of our seat mate, grabbing his crotch in the process. i just about threw in the towel then and there. thank goodness our neighbor was kind enough to pretend that he had slept throughout the whole thing, but it still took a serious pep talk from myself to pull things together after that. over the next two plane rides and the fifty minute layover in between, i went through every trick i knew to keep august entertained. and when we got through all of those, i cycled through them all over again with the same enthusiasm as if it was the first time. it was exhausting. but things always seem worse than they actually are and people are always more understanding than you expect them to be. and crotch-grabbing aside, august really did do great. anyway, we are here now and for the next week we'll be calling this cabin, nestled in these foothills, home. three cheers for vacation, hip! hip! hip!

Wowza, that landscape is stunning. Enjoy your trip! You survived -dare I say dominated?- the hard part: the flight! I never understood why people were so intolerant of babies on flights. Kudos to your seat-neighbor, and to you guys! xo

I'm glad you made it here without going totally crazy... Hopefully the trip back is decent. Not gonna lie, the thought of traveling with my own toddler one day is a little scary!
Enjoy your stay in the cabin, it's a pretty cute little place! (At least I thought so!)

I have to admit I'm one of those people who is ready to abort a trip if I'm seated next to someone with a baby. but it always depends on the mother or father. I hate people who pretend that everything is ok and ignore everyone around them. I really do. on the other hand, I totally appreciate a smile and a 'I know this may suck'. the other day a woman was giving chocolates to everyone sitting around her and her two kids before we even got of the ground. and as a result we all ended up playing with her kids at one time or another during a 12 hour flight. I'm pretty sure her open approach even caused some of us neighbors to talk more to each other than we would have otherwise.

Oh that sounds exhausting! Once I met my sister is Malibu and she had to travel on a plane with her toddler who threw up on her. It gave me a whole new appreciation for mothers. Those pictures are gorgeous, I hope you're relaxing and enjoying your time there

this is so funny! it is terrifying traveling with children, and you hear those horror stories of awful people being awful - but mostly people are pretty kind and tolerant. thank goodness!

this is breathtaking! i just got back from montana, but still i am jealous! enjoy yourselves.

that is a fantastic idea! kind of like a peace offering, in solidarity! i'm totally going to do that on the way back home, thanks for the idea!

cars are tough but planes are definitely trickier since you've got so many other people around to consider.

yes, you're right - the flower definitely looks like it could be a member of the rose family, beautiful picture.

yeah, the destination has been totally worth the effort of the flight over. and august really was a champ, i'm actually quite proud (of us both) for how well it went.

such beautiful landscape. I went to Montana with my family when I was younger but I really can't remember as much as I'd like. Hopefully, one day I'll make it back.
